Jill Scott's mom Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on the 4th of April, 1972 at Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Jill Scott was raised by her grandmother and mother. She is an only-child. Scott went to the Philadelphia High School for Girls followed by Temple University after graduating. While working two part-time jobs, Scott took classes in secondary teaching in Temple University. She planned on becoming a teacher of English at a secondary school. After three years as a teacher's aide and studying the possibility of becoming a high school English teacher fell through. Following her first gigs doing live poetry shows, she eventually teamed up Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me is the result of their collaboration. The singer performed at the Roots performance. Then, she began collaborating with musicians like Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. She gained more experience on stage as she appeared in the Canada tour of Broadway show Rent. She was also the first signee to Hidden Beach Recordings.
